This one gets my "put it on by mistake and it sucked me in" prize. That actually happened about a month or so ago. I had this show on my iPod, but I’d actually meant to play something else ... and then when I realized I hadn’t clicked on what I’d planned to hear, I kept thinking, “Ok, I’ll let it go for the rest of this tune ...” and so on. Until the end of the show.

This is a sparkling show where every note counts and just pulls you in. A few of the don't-touch-that-dial highlights are the fiery LiG, sweet and focused Althea, a Sailor > Saint that turns into a techno-space Spanish Jam, and a Truckin that turns into a Nobody's Fault jam.

Cliff saying it was his favorite show of the 80's that he saw might not appear to be that big deal, but to those who've been around here awhile I think you can see the significance.

Always been one of my favorites.

Still a backhanded compliment review.

Rates it 5 stars.

Like saying: "She's not nearly as ugly as I expected her to be" about a blind date.

I think of all the shows that I attended, 5/16/81 just might be my favorite...

CH, I just looked at the CM source. (Which we both reviewed- Who wouda thunk?)
You were not overly enthusiastic in your review. Why do you like this show so much? Thanks.

Not overly enthusiastic?

I gave it five stars, didn't I?

In spite of Garcia's rather sketchy vocals. Personally, I would only rate a select very few 80's shows at five stars. So this being one of those seems pretty enthusiastic to me.

There is a lot to like about this show/transfer. I score it high for two thrilling set lists, two interesting second set jam passages, fine SBD quality, and the X Factor...
